Chapter Eight

Lenny glanced at me for the tenth time as she drove us toward the Hurst ranch. It was amusing, to say the least. The person Lenny had in mind was her mother, whom she had called as soon as she left from the Meeting Hall and had instructed us to meet her at their shared home.

“What, Lenny?”

“Are we going to talk about how you smell like my brother, or…”

She trailed off and I laughed. Langston’s scent was barely on me. All we’d done was kiss, and I wasn’t marked in any way. Lenny was being overdramatic.

“We could, if that was the case, but since it isn’t…” I trailed off just as she had and laughed once more as she pursed her lips in annoyance.

“Hmph. So, kisses don’t transfer scents now? I learn something new every day.”

I smirked at her. “I’m pretty sure you already knew that since no one has detected Adrian’s scent on you even once.”

Her eyes widened briefly then narrowed at me. “Ha! Nice try but Adrian hasn’t been kissing on me.”

I shook my head, impressed with how she’d managed to skirt the truth without the lie causing a tremble in her heartbeat. My eyes didn’t lie, though, and I know exactly what I saw, but if she didn’t want to talk about it right now, I would respect that. We pulled up to the house and went inside to find that Mrs. Hurst hadn’t arrived yet. While we waited, we started talking about the show Alicia had put on at the Meeting Hall.

I groaned and dropped my head onto the countertop. Lenny burst out laughing, so I flipped her a solitary finger, which only caused her to laugh harder.

“Seriously, Lenny, that girl is nuts. I can’t even pee in peace!” I told her how, on more than one occasion, at work, I’d come out of the bathroom to find Alicia hovering right outside the door.

Lenny was bent over at the waist clutching at her stomach and laughing so hard, she could barely pull air into her lungs. I sincerely hoped she choked on that laughter.

I lifted my head and gave her the stink eye. “I’m glad my pain is bringing you amusement, you bitch.” And because my life had somehow not gone wrong enough in my entire twenty-six years of living, that is the exact moment Lenny and Langston’s mama chose to enter the kitchen.

“Well! That’s not quite the greeting I was expecting.” Her eyebrows were hiked near her hairline as she swept her questioning gaze back and forth between her daughter and me.

My annoyance with Lenny immediately morphed into mortification. Lenny gasped at her mother’s appearance and finally began to choke, so I ignored her and addressed her mother.

“Mrs. Hurst I am so sorry you had to hear that.” I slid off my stool and walked the short distance to stand in front of her. Dropping my gaze to the ground, I lowered my chin. “Please forgive my disrespect. I generally do not use that sort of language in front of my Elders.
